Job Specifications
About the Company
Fractional CFO
- Location: South West England (regular on-site presence required)
- Contract: Fractional / Interim
- Commitment: Approximately 2–3 days per week
- Day Rate: £850–£1,000 per day (indicative)
- Sector: Professional Sport
The Opportunity
Matter Talent is supporting an established professional sports organisation in the South West of England as it prepares for a period of significant financial and operational change.
We are seeking an experienced, commercially focused Fractional CFO to work closely with senior leadership to strengthen the existing finance function, improve financial systems and processes, and drive meaningful improvements in financial reporting and operational performance.
This is a hands-on finance transformation and operational leadership role, requiring someone who can combine strategic CFO-level experience with the willingness and ability to get involved in the detail and deliver practical improvements.
The successful individual will work alongside the existing finance team, identifying opportunities for improvement and taking an active role in implementing changes, rather than simply providing an assessment or recommendations.
Role Details
- Review and improve the existing finance systems, processes and financial controls.
- Strengthen management reporting, budgeting, forecasting and cashflow management.
- Provide hands-on financial leadership, supporting the existing finance team with day-to-day operational requirements.
- Identify inefficiencies and implement practical improvements to reporting, systems and ways of working.
- Support and develop the finance team, improving capabilities, accountability and overall effectiveness.
- Improve financial visibility across the organisation's commercial and operational activities.
- Work closely with senior leadership to provide financial insight and support commercial decision-making.
- Help establish a more efficient, commercially focused and scalable finance function.
Skills Required
We are looking for an experienced CFO, Finance Director or senior finance transformation professional with a demonstrable track record of improving finance functions and delivering change.
Ideally, you will bring:
- Previous CFO / Group FD experience, ideally within a PE-backed, investor-owned or commercially complex organisation.
- Proven hands-on finance transformation experience, particularly around systems, processes, reporting and controls.
- Strong operational finance experience, with the ability and willingness to work directly with existing finance teams.
- Experience improving management information, forecasting, cashflow and commercial reporting.
- The gravitas and credibility to engage confidently with CEOs, senior leadership teams, boards and investors.
- A pragmatic, delivery-focused approach, with a track record of implementing improvements rather than simply making recommendations.
- Strong commercial acumen and the ability to balance strategic priorities with operational requirements.
- Flexibility to spend meaningful time on site in South West England, particularly during the initial stages.
Previous experience in professional sport is not essential. We are equally interested in individuals from other commercially complex sectors, including leisure, hospitality, entertainment and multi-site businesses.
The Engagement
- The requirement is anticipated to be approximately 2–3 days per week, with flexibility around the working pattern.
- Regular on-site presence will be important, particularly during the initial stages, to build relationships, understand the existing operation and begin implementing improvements.
- The precise scope and duration are still being finalised, but the intention is to engage someone who can deliver tangible improvements to the finance function and potentially provide ongoing fractional leadership as the organisation develops.
